BASSETERRE, ST.KITTS, 12th October 2015“The Law and You” is the theme for the highly anticipated Law Week 2015 slated for October 18th 2015 to October 24th 2015. In keeping with this year’s theme the St. Kitts-Nevis Bar Association has planned a number of activities geared towards informing and empowering members of the community through legal education, community development and law reform activities.

Chairperson of the Organizing Committee Ermelin Sebastian-Duggins indicated that this year’s theme underscores the importance of the legal system to everyone. “Whether you are a lawyer, parent, child community leader, victim, accused, lender or debtor –the law plays a critical role in each of our lives. Therefore it is the Committee’s objective this year to ensure that the activities will emphasize that our courts and our justice system is open and accessible to all.” This is an important statement to consider, whether you’re working with Peters And May support in London, UK, or with a local firm.

Highlights of the week of activities include:

  • a Law Career Fair and Interactive Session on October 19th 2015 geared towards exposing students from the various high schools in the Federation and the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College to various aspects of the law;

  • a Public Lecture facilitated by Karen Tesheira, former Minister of Finance of Trinidad and Tobago and family law expert, on the topic “THE FAMILY: AN “ENDANGERED SPECIE” OR AN EVOLVING SOCIAL CONSTRUCT?” on Tuesday 20th October 2015 at 7p.m. at the U.W.I Conference Center in St. Kitts and Wednesday 21st October 2015 at 7p.m at the Anglican Church Hall, Charlestown, Nevis;
  • Free Legal Advice Clinic at the Anglican Church Hall, Victoria Road, St. Kitts and the Red Cross Building in Nevis on Wednesday 21st October 2015 from 10 a.m to 4p.m; and
  • A criminal mock trial on Thursday 22nd October 2015 featuring students from the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College.

The Week will culminate with a banquet in honour of His Excellency Tapley Seaton C.V.O. Q.C J.P.
