Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 24, 2018 (SKNIS): History was made when in keeping with the Team Unity Manifesto entitled “Prosperity for All”, the government, today, December 24, delivered on another 2015 campaign promise with the Launch of the Poverty Alleviation Programme.
At the launch at Independence Square, Basseterre, Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris said that “in that contract with the people of St. Kitts and Nevis, we gave our word to provide support in the amount of EC$500 per month to households whose gross monthly was less than EC$3,000. Today, we have delivered!”
Prime minister Harris said that the Poverty Alleviation Programme was the government’s way of acknowledging the cries of citizens in need and it took stock of their situation and focused on “meaningful action to bring sustainable relief to those who were in genuine need – by giving them a “Hand-UP.”
“As we prepared to take the reins of government, we were keenly aware that such socio-centric programming would also go a long way in helping our Federation to step up to the task of attaining the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” he said.
He added that the launch today is meant to zero in on SDG Goals 1, 2 and 10, which call for No Poverty, Zero Hunger and Reduced Inequalities.
“Today our Team Unity Government is helping the poor and low-income families all over St Kitts and Nevis. No victimization! No discrimination!” expressed the prime minister.
The prime minister said that the programme is for everyone. He noted that “from every community where an eligible resident lives, we have offered a helping hand.”
“Truth be told, this Government is a very nice Government. It is a caring Government. All our citizens can say Team Unity has made lives better in St Kitts and Nevis by the wonderful things it has been doing,” he added.
