Carel Woods Awarded For Promoting St. Kitts And Nevis Through Fcca Essay Competition
Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 13, 2015 (SKNIS): Carel Woods, former student of the Maurice Hillier Memorial Junior School, was recently awarded US$ 200 for being a finalist in the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) Children’s Competition which encourages young minds to think and learn about the cruise industry.
Over the past few years, the Ministry of Tourism, along with the FCCA has been hosting this competition within St. Kitts in both public and private schools. The Ministry of Tourism through the Ministry of Education enlisted students to participate. The competition is first done locally with a Junior and Senior Division category. The submissions then go to the FCCA for final judging.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Carlene Henry-Morton, stated that this is an excellent avenue for student to not only learn about the tourism industry but to be ambassadors of the island.
“You are never too young or too small to make a contribution to the development of tourism in the Federation,” stated Mrs. Henry-Morton. “You need to make sure that you know about your island. Start now to learn about the facts about Brimstone Hill and other areas of interest. Commit some of those facts to memory and build on them so that when you have an opportunity to speak to persons who do not know about our attractions and activities you will be able to promote St. Kitts and Nevis.
She commended the Maurice Hillier Memorial Junior School for the hard work that they have been doing in ensuring that the students participated in the essay competition and encouraged them to continue doing so.
“You are doing a very good job in making sure that you keep your students informed and giving them the opportunity to participate in our tourism product,” said Mrs. Henry-Morton.
In first place was Belize who received US $3,000; in second was Jamaica who received US$1,500 and in third was Dominica who received US $1,000. Both student and school each received the monetary prizes.
