Congratulations and well wishes have been pouring in for Prime Minister Gaston Browne and the Antigua & Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP), from opposition leaders and prime ministers across the region.
In congratulatory remarks, head of the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit pledged to continue working with Browne whom he regards as a “comrade.”
“We will continue to work together,” Skerrit told DBS radio Friday.
“I worked very well with him while he was in opposition and I have no doubt that I will work well with him when he is in government.”
Skerrit posited that it was the economy that was the United Progressive Party’s (UPP) downfall.
“The (UPP) government was experiencing some economic and fiscal challenges and the people felt they needed to bring back ‘Labour’ to help rescue things because, clearly, one would understand and appreciate that the economic situation in Antigua deteriorated to an extent and people felt that they needed Labour,” he said.
Leader of the Team Unity, the opposition coalition in St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Timothy Harris said he spoke with Browne via telephone early Friday morning about the outcome of the elections.
In a subsequent letter, Dr Harris referred to PM Browne as passionate and committed to building the nation and Caribbean region.
“The people of Antigua & Barbuda have voted overwhelmingly for change. They have voted for hope which your team offered,” Dr Harris wrote.
“We anticipate that under your astute leadership, you will restore Antigua & Barbuda to former halcyon days and put the people back to work.”
