ST. KITTS-NEVIS EMBRACES DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION

The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis is pushing forward with its Digital Transformation Strategy recognising that technology and innovation are essential tools that are central to achieving the sustainable island state agenda.

The Honourable Konris Maynard, Minister responsible for Information, Communication, and Technology, is leading the charge in digital transformation and innovation. On Thursday, December 19, 2024, during Day Three of the 2025 Budget Debate, he emphasised the importance of ensuring that the public is prepared to effectively utilise the new tools being introduced to improve digital efficiency.

“We recognise Madame Deputy Speaker, that innovation is the cornerstone of economic advancement. In line with this, our focus will be on building a future-ready workforce and so this Budget allocates funds for the upskilling of our workforce in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and the internet of things,” Minister Maynard stated.

A blockchain is a system where a record of transactions and tracking assets in a business network is recorded. The ‘Internet of Things’ describes devices with sensors, processing ability, software and other technologies that connect and exchange data with other devices.

Minister Maynard added that additional support for tech entrepreneurs and startups will be available to further create a nurturing ecosystem for innovation and entrepreneurship.

“We are investing in ICT (Information and Communication Technology) training for our youth, creating tech incubators, and supporting innovation hubs to prepare the next generation to lead,” Honourable Maynard stated.

In 2025, the Department of Technology intends to establish the foundation for a Digital Skills Academy to encourage public officers to rethink the business processes and incorporate digital tools while encouraging greater collaboration and efficiency.
