Photo: WebA mission of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) will closely monitor the development of the general elections in the Bahamas, scheduled for May, Caribbean News Service reported today.

The Bahamian authorities suggested that several international observers participated, including those of the regional bloc, in the monitoring of the development of elections in this Caribbean nation, official sources confirmed.

The Bahamian Government announced early this week the dissolution of Parliament on April 11, faced with the beginning of the electoral process, according to a communique issued by the office of Prime Minister Perry Christie.

Christie encouraged the citizens to register before Monday, April 10 to have the possibility to vote in the elections, a process held for the last time on May 8, 2012.

The Liberal Progressive Party of the current prime minister won the elections then, securing 30 of the 38 seats in Parliament after defeating the National Free Movement, the second most important political organization in the archipelago.
