In 10 Caribbean nations, gay men can face up to 25 years imprisonment. LGBT people suffer verbal or physical abuse, employment discrimination, and murder, which is often undocumented and without justice. Kevin Mendez from Belize and Melissa Bryant from St Kitts and Nevis implore One Young World to help fight for the elimination of discrimination against LGBT minorities.

 

Melissa and Kevin spoke in the Human Rights Plenary Session which addressed the question, ‘Why are the Lesbian Gay Bisexual & Transgender (LBGT) communities still being persecuted in 2016?’

This session took place at the 2016 One Young World Summit, the world’s premier forum for young leaders, in Ottawa, Canada. The Summit brought together 1,300 delegates from all 196 UN-recognised countries, empowering them to make lasting connections to create positive change.
