On Thursday , October 27th, 2016 at 6pm the Ryerson University hosted the inaugural Winston Isaac Lecture in Healthcare Services. The event which is  hosted by the University’s School of Health Services Management recognizes the legacy of Dr. Winston Isaac’s decades of service to Ryerson University and the School of Health Services Management (SHSM). The St.Kitts born and raised Dr. Isaac is the former Director of the Ryerson University School of Health Services Management. Isaac retired in June 2015 after 25 years of service at Ryerson. The evening’s distinguished guest speaker was Dr. Samir K. Sinha. Dr. Sinha is the Director of Geriatrics at Sinai Health System and University Health Network Hospitals in Toronto and an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is Co-Chair of Ryerson University’s National Institute on Ageing and a member of the University’s Board of Governors.  In his lecture titled “On Becoming a Geriatrician, Health Strategist, and Effective Advocate for Change”, Dr. Sinha shared  how he used key experiences at Oxford to get the training he needed to start a career anchored in medicine but also eventually influential in health policy and strategy spheres in Canada and beyond. He highlighted  how our ageing demographics represent societies’ greatest public policy challenges and opportunities, and lessons he has learned in becoming an effective advocate for change.

Dr. was born in Molineux and  attended the Molineux-Estridge Primary School and later the St. Kitts-Nevis Grammar School.

He served as  Associate Professor and Director  in the School of Health Services Management at Ryerson University in Toronto.

His academic positions have included part-time and full-time instructor at several colleges and universities; Program Director at the Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences; Program Coordinator with the Chang School at Ryerson University and Director for the School of Health Services Management at Ryerson.

Dr. Isaac also holds undergraduate degrees in Science, Psychology and Business Administration, two degrees in Adult Education and Health Administration & Policy at the Master’s level and a PhD in Adult and Continuing Education.

He is also a Certified Health Executive with the Canadian College of Health Leaders. He holds a Diploma in Respiratory Technology from the Michener Institute and in 2007, he was made an Alumnus of Distinction in recognition of being an outstanding graduate who has excelled in his career and demonstrated commitment to his community and the roles played in the Canadian Health Care System.

In 2010, Dr. Isaac was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Central West Local Health Integration Network (CW LHIN) in Brampton. He is also a reviewer for accrediting health administration programs across North America for the Association of University Programs in Health Administration.

Dr. Isaac is a co-founder of The Walnut Foundation, a Men’s Health Interest and Support group dedicated to development and education of Black men and the wider community in taking responsibility for their health. The Foundation was established in 2007, incorporated in 2010 and gained charitable organization status in 2012.

 

Dr. Isaac is a sought-after speaker in Prostate Cancer Awareness and Men Taking Responsibility for their health. He is very skilled in making healthcare information understandable to the general public.
