FORT LAUDERDALE, Apr. 19, CMC – The US based carrier, Spirit Airlines says it will be withdrawing from the Cuban market – joining two other carriers to announce plans to stop flying to the island.

The ultra low cost carrier has blamed insufficient loads to warrant continued flights to the Spanish speaking Caribbean island.

On December 1 last year, the airline started flights twice daily between Fort Lauderdale  Hollywood International and Havana International.

However President and CEO of Spirit, Bob Fornardo told the Sun Sentinel newspaper last week that “ the costs of serving Havana continue to outweigh the demand for service”.

As a result, Spirit will begin reducing frequencies starting next month before completely withdrawing from the Cuban capital on June 1.

The other airlines to cease operations are Silver Airways that will pull out as of April 22, while Frontier Airlines will have its last flight to the island on June 4.
