The Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) is projected to win the 2014 general elections in Montserrat. With a majority of ballots now counted, the trend points to a clear and convincing victory for the PDM which currently leads in 7 of 9 top spots for the Legislative Assembly.

Premier-elect and Leader of the PDM Donaldson Romeo early Friday morning appeared on national radio ZJB/Radio Montserrat to thank voters for practically guaranteeing that his party will form the British territory’s next government.
The Ruben Meade led MCAP administration lost all but two of the six seats they held.
The 12 polling stations in the six electoral districts in the volcano ravaged island opened at 7.00 am (local time) . There were 3, 886 eligible voters.

In the 2009 general election, the MCAP lead by Rueben Meade won six of the nine seats with independent candidates including former Premier Dr. Lovell Lewis, winning the other three seats. In the 2009 poll, 2347 people voted.

Meade campaigned on the theme that his administration needs another term to continue the work it started in 2009.

“Looking at where the country was in 2009…we think we deserve the opportunity to complete the work we started”,
Interestingly a similar appeal was made by the Balwyn Spencer led UPP Administration in Antigua Barbuda and they too lost the government their. Prime minister Dr Denzil Douglas, who leads a minority government in St.Kitts Nevis is also calling for another term to continue work after some 18 years in office.

The election was observed by a four-member team from the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA).

The PDM leader appealed for a united Montserrat and reiterated his party’s slogan of putting people first in his incoming administration. (
