TV Feature: Civil Servants Discuss How They Will Spend Their Double Salary, As Well As VAT Day

The Team Unity administration’s decision to give an extra month’s payout in December to all civil servants, auxiliary workers and pensioners on the government’s payroll in both St. Kitts and Nevis, as well as PEP workers, Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College employees and others in the public sector, has brought palpable relief and excitement to the roughly 10,000 persons who received this “double salary.”

There is a sense of optimism for thousands of local households that can now better manage competing obligations this Christmas (such as renovating their homes, purchasing new furniture and other household durable items, making charitable donations, etc.), in light of Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris’ announcement on Saturday, November 19th, 2016 that the Cabinet of Ministers had taken the decision the day before, “to ensure that all share in the economic fortunes of our beloved country.”

The Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis spoke with several Civil Servants about how they intend to use their double salary and also about the upcoming Discounted VAT-Rate Day.

  1. For the good of the country, I strongly disagree with the issuance of double salaries for Christmas. There are many other projects including the replacement of the CAT scan at Jennifer Hospital was sneezed urgent attention instead of what is mainly a political move. I do not begrudge the extra salary working civil servants get. In a country of scarce resources and many needs it may not be the best use of resources
