MARIGOT–The ongoing investigations into looting following Hurricanes Irma and Maria continue on a daily basis. Nine more persons have been taken into custody during the last few days suspected of looting and five summoned to court, the Gendarmerie disclosed Friday. More than 100 persons have been arrested to date.
Since the passing of Hurricane Irma, 110 searches have been carried out. Detectives and Gendarmes from three different units searched two apartments on Monday, October 2, and found a considerable amount of goods stolen in the days following Hurricane Irma. The loot included a refrigerator, televisions, washing machines and two large sacks of assorted perfumes and cosmetics still in their packages. The amount of goods seized covered an area of 10 by 3 metres. The suspects were detained.
Four individuals, including a warehouse manager of a business in the Hope Estate industrial zone, were arrested on October 1 for theft of goods after the hurricanes. This group used a refrigerated truck to steal luxury table and silverware, domestic appliances, liquor and food on September 7. The warehouse manager was immediately sentenced to six months in prison for theft and receipt of stolen goods.
Prosecutor Samuel Finielz said this theft was particularly serious as the refrigerated vehicle could have been used for emergency food distribution.
The Red Cross in the meantime has picked up some goods from the Gendarmerie in Marigot that have not been claimed by owners. The Red Cross is charged with distributing clothing, dry goods and other useful materials to people in the most need.
