OAS SECRETARY GENERAL CONGRATULATES PRIME MINISTER HARRIS ON HIS OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, January 12, 2022 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), His Excellency Louis Almagro Lemes, today (Wednesday, January 12, 2022) congratulated the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris for his outstanding leadership, particularly during these difficult times.

Addressing the Virtual Protocolary Meeting of the Permanent Council of the OAS, at which Prime Minister Harris was the specially invited guest speaker, Secretary General Almagro said, “Allow me at the outset to congratulate you on your stellar stewardship of your country during this critical moment of the pandemic, which has been so challenging for so many of us.”

Wednesday’s meeting was held under the chairmanship of His Excellency Dr. Everson Hull, Permanent Representative of St. Kitts and Nevis to the OAS.

In November of 2021, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) recognized and lauded the personal advocacy efforts of Prime Minister Harris in ensuring as many people as possible were vaccinated against the deadly virus.

Mr. Almagro said, “I join the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in commending you on the success of the vaccine rollout which has resulted in nearly 80 percent of your citizens vaccinated and only 28 deaths reported as of January 2022.”

Secretary General Almagro also cited a report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which indicated that St. Kitts and Nevis entered the COVID-19 pandemic in a position of fiscal strength.

He added, “[The IMF] also projected a 10 percent GDP growth for St. Kitts and Nevis in 2022 dependent on a strong tourism recovery, and so I commend you and your Government for this achievement.”

The OAS Secretary General said he looks forward to working closely with Prime Minister Harris and the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis as they look to advance the work of the Organization of American States.
