St.Lucia is rife with widespread rumours that a faction of the Opposition UWP United Workers Party maybe planning to breakaway from the 50 year Old UWP and form the NUWP-New United Workers Party.

The leaders of the United Workers Party (UWP) have declined to comment . It is spsculated that the new party will be comprised of former and current members of both the ruling St.Lucia Labour Party and the United Workers Party.

UWP Party Leader Allen Chastanet commented on the speculation.

Chastanet told the media  “I do not comment on speculation. That is just a speculation and I could not comment on that. But if that is the case let’s wait and see an official announcement.”

Chairman of the UWP Ezechiel Joseph echoed similar sentiments.

“I am not aware of that and as far as rumours are concerned, I would not comment on that. We have no details about that so I won’t comment,” Joseph said.

It is no secret that there has been division in the UWP with some members opposing the leadership of Chastanet.

The New UWP will be no doubt looking at the success of the Team UNITY in St.Kitts –Nevis  where factions of the ruling party broke away to join with other political groups to for the now governing Team UNITY Administration.

St.Kitts-Nevis Prime Minister  and Team UNITY Government Leader Dr. Timothy Harris was the recent special guest speaker at the UWP’s 50th Anniversary Gala.
