The daughter of a couple who were shot dead after retiring to St Kitts has branded the police investigation into their death a ‘cover up’.

Great-grandparents Mildred and James Daniel were slaughtered as they slept in their beds in their whitewashed villa, nearly four years ago.

James, aged 77, was shot in the head while Mildred, 75, was shot in the chest and abdomen. Their bodies were left decomposing until they were discovered on April 11, 2010.

No one has ever been brought to justice for the heinous crime.

Their grieving daughter Christine Daniel criticised the investigation into their deaths and said they had hit a “brick wall” in their search for answers.

Today, Black Country Coroner Robin Balmain adjourned an inquest into their death after hearing pleas from their devastated children not to formally close the case.

After labelling the investigation into their deaths “farcical”, Mr Balmain said: “I’m prepared to adjourn this and see if anything else comes to light.”

Christine said after the inquest: “I have given them four years and I said that if they did not do anything constructive, I would speak my mind.

“They did not gather any information at the scene of the crime. They could not provide us with the report from the day they went to the house and found the bodies. The coroner has received nothing. It’s a cover up.

“We want the extra time to find answers.”

Christine also alleged that the authorities on the idyllic isle knew who had committed the crime.

She said: “The St Kitts authorities know who did it. They know, it’s as though it’s being covered up by somebody. “The way the investigation was done from the very beginning was bizarre.”

The couple, known affectionately as Jim and Millie, were originally from St Kitts and moved to Birmingham in the 1950s where they lived in Taywood Drive, Small Heath.

Mildred was a caretaker at various city primary schools including Yew Tree and Regents Park. James was a floor manager at the Birmingham engineering firm Imperial Metal Industry.

They had eight children, 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren who had been looking forward to spending time with them at their home which was part of the Half Moon Court development.
