CAYON YOUTH MENTORING PROGRAM EMBRACED BY POLICE

Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 27, 2016 (RSCNPF): The proposed launch of a community based mentoring program for youth in the Cayon Community as a way to reach our youth and help them to navigate the challenges of today’s life and make positive decisions is commended by the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force.

The program dubbed ‘Mentoring and Aspiring Youths’ “M.A.Y” is a collaborative effort of a group of concerned residents in the Cayon area, the Cayon Primary School and has the support of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force.

“MAY” will provide mentoring for 30 students of the Cayon Primary school who are between the ages of 7 through 11. The mentors, all of whom are proven leaders in their respective fields of occupation and have demonstrated the traits of good citizenship will give of their time to encourage and develop the young boys and girls in hopes that they too become good citizens.

The program will officially launch on Monday (May 30) with a meeting of mentors, parents, and the participants. The goal is to have formal weekly interaction of mentor and mentee that will serve as an opportunity to guide and encourage the young person.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Terrance James, a resident of Cayon and a past student of the Cayon Primary School is one of the mentors.  Commenting on the program he said, “I was happy to see this initiative come to fruition and grabbed the opportunity to be a part of it. If I can guide and help to mold one young person into a better citizen, that’s reward for me…and I’m sure for all of the other mentors.”  He added, “this is the kind of activity that we in the Police Service wants to see in our communities.  It ties in well with our efforts to build partnerships, and so, the officers at the Cayon Police Station have embraced it as a part of their community engagement.

The Executive Body of “M.A.Y” consists of Chairman-Mr. Terrance James, Vice Chairman-Mr. Jefferson Edwards, Secretary-Eshe Hendrickson, Treasurer-Mr. Glen Daniel, PRO-Mr. Aidan Hendrickson and Asst. PRO-Mr. Olando Sutton.
